Cathedral of Saint Anne

カテドラル
By Jose Herrera (CC)

During El Salvador's golden era of coffee, the city of Santa Ana prospered. Coffee haciendas sprouted one after another. Coffee prices and income sky-rocketed, enabling the construction of the gothic Cathedral of Santa Ana. The gothic-style church stands today as a reminder of Santa Ana's past prosperity. Most cathedrals in El Salvador and Latin America were designed with the Spanish Colonial Style. The Cathedral of Santa Ana stands in contrast.

Construction on the Cathedral of Saint Anne started on January 21, 1906; the cathedral was consecrated on February 11, 1913. On February 24, 1959, the marble altar to the Virgin Mary was consecrated; the cathedral was finally completed. Today, the North Tower has three manually activated bells, the South Tower three electronically activated bells. The South Tower bells came from Holland in 1949.
