Simon Fraser University (SFU) is a public university in British Columbia. The main campus is on Burnaby Mountain in Burnaby, and satellite campuses are in Vancouver and Surrey. Simon Fraser, who the university was named after, was a North West Company fur trader and explorer. In the 1960s and early 1970s the campus was a hotbed of political activism, culminating in a dispute in the Department of Political Science, Sociology, and Anthropology involving ideological differences among faculty. The resolution included dismantling the department and breaking it up into today's separate departments. SFU is ranked 2nd in Canada’s top Comprehensive Universities by 2008's Macleans Magazine, 68th in the world, and 4th in Canada in 2008 Ranking of World Universities. Established in 1965, the university presently has over 25,000 undergraduate students.
One of these students was Terry Fox. When Terry was an 18-year-old student at SFU and a junior varsity basketball player he was diagnosed with bone cancer and his leg amputated. With a prosthetic leg, Fox set out to run across Canada on a run called the Marathon of Hope to raise both funding and awareness concerning cancer. As a result of Terry Fox, running for charitable causes has now spread across the world.
If you watch television and movies, you may have seen the Academic Quadrangle and other parts of SFU. Due to the contemporary architecture, the main campus has been used to shoot parts of science fiction television series such as Stargate SG-1 and Battlestar Galactica. First used as a film set for the 1972 science fiction film The Groundstar Conspiracy, the campus continued to be used in television and movies to this day. The Academic Quadrangle was also a backdrop in the television series The X-Files. Many parts of the Burnaby campus were also used for filming The 6th Day and Agent Cody Banks. The 2008 remake of the The Day the Earth Stood Still was also partially shot on the Burnaby campus.
