The University of Vienna is a public university in Vienna, Austria. Founded in 1365, the university is one of the oldest universities in Europe. Over 72,000 students attend what is the oldest university in the German-speaking world.
The University of Vienna, like all other universities and academies in Austria, once featured a novel system of government for academia: democratic representation. Students, who were the largest group, junior faculty and full professors all held power equally. The three groups had the right to send their representatives to boards, and the boards then voted on almost every issue. This system guaranteed that all groups had equal opportunity to introduce changes, but the system was reformed under former Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel, who was the Chancellor of Austria from February 2000 to January 2007. Power is now concentrated with the full professors.
The school has produced many famous alumni including Bruno Bettelheim, Sigmund Freud, Arthur Koestler, Gustav Mahler, Gregor Mendel, Pope Pius III, and Karl Popper. Please click here if you would like to read more about the university of Vienna and see more pictures.
